Paul Richard Sully has been writing for some fifteen years. His writing began after the discovery of a diary that documented the passage of time in Auschwitz concentration camp. This brought forth the novel Whispering Birches which closely resembles the sequence of events related in the diary. The story was later highlighted in two documentary films produced and directed by Maya Sarfaty. The author continued his research into the case and found further documents that inspired Truth in Ash his second book. It relates the pre-war and post-war experience of the main guard in Whispering Birches. He also followed up with Blood Orange Blossom that traced the story of the guard's camp lover who left for Israel shortly after marrying a member of Irgun the organisation that fought for the establishment of Israel.
Following completion of the trilogy, the author produced another trilogy (Fallen Beech, Banyan Veil and Magnolia Blue) tracing the fall of Hong Kong to the Japanese occupation, its emergence as a tiger economy and its full integration into the Chinese state. A family of three generations live through their ups and downs such that their journey reflects that of the wider changes in global society. The author is working on a new trilogy and has completed the first book Mahogany Rose which traces the journey of a scientist in newly independent Ghana.
The author has also worked on other projects outside of his Tree of Faith life work. These include a ghost story in Camino Ingles that sees the protagonist walking through Northern Spain in a state of delusion that conjures up a lost lover. Cursed Bloom was another fantasy novel that sees the transfer of a curse of everlasting life set in Geneva. Fateor and Ninth Life are autobiographic reflections of a period in which the author lost his wife to a brain tumour. On recovering from the trauma of his loss, the author took up gardening in one of London's allotments. This inspired his latest book Wandle Tails, another romantic fantasy that combined Russian folklore with animal stories whilst overlooked by a retired banker and his grandson. Finally, the author also dabble in poetry and released a selection of varied tomes under the title Eclectic.
Each novel and poem has connections to the author's private life. The books have a recurring style of being written in the first person, though whereby the protagonist and time frequently changes. Though sometimes a challenge, the novels have social commentary and religious insight. The end result is a tightly woven tapestry of experiences that direct to ward compassionate discipline.
